Bio

Joanna Malfatti

 Joanna earned her BFA and MFA in music from California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) where she studied with esteemed drummers Joe La Barbera, Randy Gloss, John Bergamo, Aaron Serfaty, and Alfred Ladzekpo.

Joanna has been a featured performer/composer on three CalArts Women cds and four CalArts Jazz cds. She has been the drummer/percussionist in a variety of groups including inFLUX Ensemble, KREAtion Orchestra, and Djembe Nova, and is the founder of The Joanna Malfatti Trio. She has performed with notable musicians Vinny Golia, Wadada Leo Smith, Larry Koonse, Darek Oles, and Charlie Owens as well as various jazz, R&B, Afro-Cuban, rock, pop, and African ensembles throughout Los Angeles and Orange counties. Joanna has also done sideline work for film and TV and can be seen on Jane the Virgin, and The Gambler.

Joanna is an experienced educator as well. She has taught within the Garden Grove and Westminster school districts as well as for Community Arts Partnership, Amuse Music Center, and Academy of Creative Education. Joanna has also served as Adjunct Instructor at National University, and teaches private lessons through Joanna's Drum School online and in Long Beach, CA.
